 FAQs

How do I know which side of the AFM® dressing to use?

Routine wound assessment includes evaluation of wound exudate and a plan to achieve a moist wound environment. If excessive drainage needs to be removed, the “Higher Drainage” application option should be used. If a wound needs hydration, consider the “Lower Drainage” option. Each dressing has been printed with directions for use.

How long can AFM dressings be left in place?
Dressings are commonly left on until clinical reassessment. Secondary absorbent dressings can be changed, if they become saturated, without removing AFM drssing.

Can dressings be cut to size?
Active Fluid Management® dressings were designed to be cut-to-size. The cut dressing will maintain its physical integrity without unraveling.

Do AFM dressings adhere to the wound?
AFM dressings have a non-adherent coating and has been found to be non-adherent to most wounds. Using the dressing in the proper direction on wounds with less exudate also reduces the amount of adhesion. In the eventsome adhesion is experienced, re-moisten the dressing with sterile saline or water to ease removal, or use AFM Ag ASSIST non-adherant dressings..

How do you secure AFM dressings?
AFM  dressings may be secured with an adhesive secondary dressing (roll gauze, tape or medical adhesive) depending on the anatomical location and periwound skin concerns.

Should AFM dressings be pre-wet before applying?

There is no need to pre-wet AFM dressings, but they may be pre-wet with saline, sterile water or wound gel for wounds requiring additional hydration.

Does the silver ion in AFM Ag dressing need to be activated?
No. Silver releases when exposed to sodium from the human body. The dressing can be applied wet or dry.

Is AFM compatible with wound cleansers and/or debriding agents?
AFM performance has not been altered by any of the commercial wound cleansers tested. However, it has been documented that silver can compromise the effectiveness of some debriding enzymes.

Can I use AFM dressings to debride?
AFM dressings are not intended to be used for debridement. However, some autolytic debridement of slough may occur when using AFM, resulting in a thin film of residue under the dressing over time. If this is observed, consider increasing the change frequency of the AFM dressing to ensure fluid management is not compromised.

How do AFM dressings work under compression wraps?
The ability of Active Fluid Management dressings to pump fluid away from the wound bed helps to prevent maceration, even under compression. Wounds with significant drainage may require additional absorptive secondary dressing.

What materials can be used as secondary dressings?
Inexpensive roll gauze, ABD pads or foams all make excellent replaceable secondary dressing choices.

Can I use Active Fluid Management dressings over skin grafts?
AFM Ag ASSIST graft covers have been used extensively to manage fluid and protect skin grafts.

Can I use AFM with Negative Pressure Therapy?
AFM dressings serve as an excellent wound contact layer or wick under negative pressure. The dressing can be fenestrated to help improve flow if necessary.
